Melody was killed in a murder-suicide by her husband that took place in the parking lot of the West Virginia State Police.

The couple arrived at the state police facility with their 10-year-old daughter in their vehicle. Investigations indicate that he fired two shots at Melody, with one shot striking her. He then turned the weapon on himself, taking his own life.
